Centralizing remote monitoring across distributed engineering sites
R&D PROJECT
SmartSite is a versatile IoT solution that connects any engineering system – power, climate, access, utilities – to a single management interface. Built for organizations running infrastructure across multiple sites, it gives operators real-time oversight, automated fault alerting, and scheduled maintenance management from one place.
CHALLENGE
Organizations that operate distributed physical infrastructure – whether power substations, data centers, telecom towers, or municipal buildings – face the same underlying problem: each site runs multiple independent engineering systems with no unified way to monitor them together.
Without centralized visibility, faults go undetected until they cause downtime or require a physical inspection. A generator running low on fuel, a battery bank with a failing cell, a cooling unit that trips in summer heat, an unauthorized access event at an unmanned site – none of these are visible until someone is already on-site to see them.
To address this, we worked on a platform capable of connecting any combination of engineering systems to a central monitoring center, regardless of the equipment type, physical conditions of the site, or available communications infrastructure.
SOLUTION
Our team designed the solution around a universal IoT controller available in four hardware configurations, each targeting a different deployment context.
- The standard version handles complex automation tasks with 70 analog inputs, 16 relays, and 14 digital I/Os, supporting RS485, RS232, CAN, Ethernet, 1-wire, and IR interfaces alongside optional Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity.
- A lighter configuration addresses smaller sites where full I/O capacity isn’t needed.
- For outdoor or industrial environments, a ruggedized variant housed in an IP65-rated enclosure handles temperatures from -40°C to +50°F and operates on anything from 12V to 60V.
- A Linux-based build extends the line for deployments that require a more open and customizable operating environment.
All connected sites feed into a centralized web monitoring platform where operations teams manage user permissions, configure alerts and notification priorities, schedule maintenance reminders, and generate reports by any tracked parameter.

RESULTS
The platform has been configured and deployed across a wide range of use cases: monitoring AC and DC power systems, managing generator installations, tracking fuel levels and detecting leaks, controlling climate and ventilation systems, overseeing battery banks at the individual cell level, and monitoring fire, security, and access control systems.
