IVO in-vehicle onboarding

An AI-powered driver onboarding system for modern and old fleets

R&D PROJECT

IVO helps users understand the vehicle's features without reading a manual. Built for mobile devices and in-vehicle infotainment systems, it gives OEMs, rental services, and transportation companies a way to onboard drivers in advance or the moment they get behind the wheel.

CHALLENGE

Modern vehicles come packed with features that most drivers never fully learn to use. Indicators light up with no clear explanation, headlights adjust on their own, and advanced systems go unnoticed simply because no one explains them. The traditional fix, a manual, is too long and too disconnected from the moment a driver actually needs the information. Bamboo Apps, an automotive software development unit of Bamboo Group, set out to find a faster, more intuitive way to acquaint drivers with their vehicle.

SOLUTION

The team designed an onboarding experience built around two complementary components: a mobile application and a context-aware in-car voice assistant.

The mobile app lets drivers point their smartphone camera at any part of the vehicle’s interior, such as the handbrake or a head unit, and instantly receive a concise explanation of its function. For rental customers, the app also includes a simplified guide to follow pre-defined onboarding steps.

Once a driver is on the road, they can benefit from IVO’s voice assistant available from the infotainment system. The assistant delivers guidance attuned to the vehicle’s or driver behavior, e.g., it explains how to connect a phone via CarPlay or Android Auto, recommends enabling cruise control under suitable conditions, and introduces blind spot monitoring the first time it activates. IVO also works with safety-critical alerts, prompting the driver to stop and inspect the vehicle if it detects low tire pressure, an engine fault, or low fuel, and directing them to the nearest service station when necessary.

RESULTS

The first version of IVO was unveiled at GITEX 2022 in Dubai in front of an international audience of technology buyers.

Later, the project attracted a grant of €305,427 from the European Union, awarded by the Estonian Business and Innovation Agency, to support its further development.

These days, IVO is offered as a commercial product to OEMs, dealerships, rental and carsharing companies, and commercial fleet operators.
