Redesigning JLR’s connected car application
CLIENT: JLR
InControl Remote is Jaguar Land Rover's connected car application that gives drivers remote control over their vehicle. With the app, users can check fuel levels and door status, lock and unlock the car, pre-condition the cabin, locate the vehicle, and request roadside assistance.
CHALLENGE
Having worked with Bamboo Apps, an automotive software unit of Bamboo Group, on the original InControl Remote suite, JLR returned to the team to lead the second version – a complete revamp of the architecture, design, and functionality across both iOS and Android versions.
The brief was substantial. The existing architecture needed to be rebuilt from the ground up to support long-term scalability and easier maintenance. The UI had to be brought in line with modern connected car expectations and JLR’s evolving brand identity. And the entire product had to meet the automotive industry security standards.
SOLUTION
The app’s architecture was rebuilt following clean architecture fundamentals, SOLID principles, a reactive approach, and CI/CD integration for both iOS and Android. The restructure reduced dependencies between system layers, made the apps more stable and testable, and moved all business logic into clearly defined, self-contained use cases, so the codebase was significantly easier to maintain and extend. The Android version was migrated to Kotlin.
The UI was redesigned around updated business logic and use cases, with a shorter path to the app’s core functions, a new homepage giving an at-a-glance vehicle status overview, and a redesigned map view with more detailed journey information. Polished graphics, smooth animations, and streamlined navigation brought the experience in line with what premium car users expect.
On security, Bamboo Apps worked alongside JLR’s Connected Car Team to identify potential vulnerabilities and apply OWASP-compliant safeguards, covering data encryption and storage requirements, the use of official Apple and Google libraries, and the implementation of certificate and public key pinning.

RESULTS
InControl Remote 2.0 was successfully released on both the App Store and Google Play.
The project marked Bamboo Apps’ second consecutive collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover on the InControl Remote suite, and the beginning of an ongoing relationship with one of the world’s most recognized premium automotive brands.
